Introduction to Ecology - A short course on habitat assessment in Inishowen

The Inishowen River Guardians Programme is delighted to offer this new short course facilitated by well known ecologist Aengus Kennedy from Nature North West. The course is run over 2 half days and provides an introduction to the principles of ecology with some theory and some practice. This course is open to anyone over `18 years and no prior knowledge of ecology is required. Booking is free and registration is essential.
Date: Saturday 21st and Saturday 28th May 2022
Time: 10am - 2 pm each day

Location: Colgan Hall and two outdoor locations in Inishowen
What to bring: Boots, raingear, midge repellent, sunscreen, lunch. All other equipment will be provided.
Day 1 - In Day 1 we will explore the technical jargon in ecology, look at the interdependence of species and elements of the non-living world. We will also look at how habitats are classified in Ireland and during the fieldtrip participants will be shown how to classify some common Inishowen habitats.
Day 2 - In Day 2 we will look at basic surveying technique and living and non-living factors that effect a habitat. We will look at ways to survey plants and calculate their abundance.
About Aengus Kennedy, Nature North West
Aengus Kennedy has run NatureNorthWest for 8 years and delivers a range of ecology and environmental education services. Aengus has been delivering habitat maps, assessments and species lists for a number of community organisations and schools in recent years. He has also been delivering bird, bat and flora surveys for the past 8 years. In 2021 he was the ecologist in charge of habitat mapping and species lists for the ECO Carn biodiversity action plan compiled in collaboration with the Inishowen Rivers Trust. Aengus specialised in field ecology completing a diploma with UCC and is currently a member of the Community Foundation for Ireland’s directory of ecologists.
About Inishowen River Guardians Programme
The Inishowen River Guardians Programme was developed in 2019 and since then has trained over 100 volunteers on skills that can be used to survey, monitor and restore rivers to good status. Courses cover a wide range of topics such as Safe Working in Water, riverfly monitoring, water chemistry, willow spilling, nature-based solutions, pond building etc, as is open to anyone in the community who wishes to learn more about their local rivers and take an active involvement in restoring them to good health.
The Inishowen Rivers Trust is supported by the Resilience Pilot Project which is funded through the Local Authority Waters Programme by the Department for Housing, Local Government and Heritage and is managed by The Rivers Trust.
