Event description
French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface and with a deep colour

About this Event

French polishing is a very old European furniture finishing technique dating from the 17th century. It results in a very fine traditional finish with a deep colour and lustre which highlights the qualities of the timber and the workmanship of the item. This trade, which was once common, is now rather exclusive but is still used in the furniture restoration and conservation trades .

However , French Polish can be applied to any piece of furniture and will enhance its value and qualities.

This hands on workshop is hosted by Ger Griffin who joined the Rediscovery team in 2010 and has more than 40 years of experience in antique furniture restoration.

The workshop will include the following:

- History of French polishing

- Materials used

- Selection of items

- Skills and techniques

- Q&A
