This 3 hour workshop will introduce the key principles of S&C and is targeted at physiotherapists and physical therapists.

About this event

This three hour workshop will introduce the key principles of strength and conditioning (S&C) and is targeted at physiotherapists and physical therapists who wish to enhance their knowledge in this area. There will be three online live sessions where theory and the application of theory to practice will be covered. The key topics covered on the day include the following:

  1. Principles of training

  2. Periodisation of training

  3. Monitoring of training to prevent injury and enhance performance

  4. Principles of strength, power, hypertrophy and muscular endurance development

  5. Technical aspects of key strength exercises

  6. Plyometric training

  7. Speed training

The structure of the workship is detailed below.

  • 09.30-10:45: Lecture and Q&A on principles of training, periodisation, monitoring and program design for strength, power, hypertrophy and muscular endurance

  • 11.00-11.35: Lecture on plyometric training

  • 11.40-12:10: Lecture on speed training

  • 12.10-12.30: Q&A Session

All participants will be provided with an online resource pack at the workshop containing all  lecture notes, related research articles and relevant video clips. When participants register they will be sent a link to the live online sessions a week in advance of the workshops.

Organiser of Introduction to Strength and Conditioning for Physiotherapists (Online)

Tom  is  a lecturer specialising in strength and conditioning (S&C) in the Physical Education and Sport Sciences Department in the University of Limerick since 2015. His teaching and research interests focus on S&C with a particular emphasis on program design, strength assessment and monitoring of training. In addition, Tom leads research related to injury surveillance and prevention. Tom has published widely in S&C and is a Senior Editor for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (number one S&C journal in the world). Recently, Tom's expertise in teaching was recognised by UL when he won  the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award for 2018. Tom completed his BA in Physical Education, MSc in Sport Science and PhD (strength training for rugby) in UL.

Tom has extensive experience in S&C and speed/ agility coaching and is an accredited coach with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association. He has previously been an S&C/ speed coach with Munster Rugby (2006 to 2012),  and the Head of S&C for the Irish Institute of Sport (2012 to 2015). Tom currently is the S&C coach for a number of Irish Olympic and Paralympic athletes including Tom Barr (European 400 m hurdles Bronze Medallist, 4th in the 400 m hurdles at the Rio Olympics). In addition, Tom is also an ex-international Irish sprinter and Olympian having competed in the 4 x 100 m relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. In Sept 2018, Tom was inducted into the UL Sports Hall of Fame.
