Workshop Descriptions
Title: Ultimate Frisbee
Presenter: Liam Clohessy IPPEA Chairperson
Ultimate Frisbee is a high paced, fun invasion game that requires limited equipment. It is easy to learn and is extremely inclusive of pupils of all abilities. Ultimate Frisbee is unique to many other sports, in that it is self-refereed which encourages students to develop conflict resolution skills. It also promotes a balanced approach to competition as there is an emphasis on sportsmanship and fair play. These values mark it out as an ideal game to introduce as part of a quality PE programme. It’s called Ultimate for a reason, so come along and try out this great game and be in with the chance of winning a starter pack for your school!
Title: Child Friendly Skill Development/Skill Acquisition
Presenter: Eamon Ryan
Organisation: Cork GAA
In this workshop legendary cork ladies football manager and former primary school teacher Eamon Ryan will explore how to put the child at the centre of the process of skill development/skill acquisition. Adopting a ‘teacher as facilitator’ approach, the process of providing positive and accurate feedback will be examined ensuring all players feel worthy, competent and successful. Using practical hurling and football examples, participants will consider how to create a child friendly environment for your games lesson.
Title: Quality P.E. Activities for the Child with Special Educational Needs
Presenter: Kathleen Fitzgerald
Organisation: St. Francis Special School, Beaufort, Co. Kerry
Kathleen Fitzgerald, a P.E. teacher in a special needs school, has put together a collection of useful practical ideas that have been tried and tested and “work” in P.E. classes for children with varied special needs. The workshop will include many different activities to improve Sensory Integration for children on the Autistic Spectrum; games, activities and exercises to improve strength, coordination and balance for children with dyspraxia and other special needs. The improvement of posture, gross and fine motor skills will be paramount throughout the workshop.
Title: “FMS – ACE”
FMS – Fundamental – Movement - Skills
ACE – Accumulations – Combinations - Equipment
Presenters: Eoin Fitzpatrick and Kevin Murrary
Organisation: Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh, Cobh, Co.Cork
Fundamental Movement Skills are basic observable patterns of movement. In this workshop we will focus on maximising our PE time by integrating all three categories of FMS – Stability, Locomotion and Manipulation & Coordination. We will use simple pieces of equipment in imaginative and innovative ways. We will also look at combining the three categories into accumulation drills to enhance and extend our PE classes while also covering all three categories.
Title: Climbing Wall
Organisation: Mardyke Arena
The Mardyke Arena Climbing Wall offers an exciting challenge for complete beginners through to serious climbers. Qualified instructors will guide you through the use of all equipment, plus give coaching tips on how to improve your climbing, whether it is your first time or if you have been climbing for years. This fun workshop will highlight the value of the outdoor challenges strand of the PE curriculum as a particularly enjoyable and unforgettable experience for both students and teachers alike.
Title: Circuits with a Twist
Presenters: Susan Marron, Fiona Greevy, Ciara Blennerhassett, Grace Crowley
Organisation: IPPEA Committee members
This workshop will take you through a series of fun and active circuits using newspapers, paper plates, dice/die, balloons and benches. The circuits can be woven into athletics, gymnastics, dance and games lessons or can be standalone lessons to develop health related fitness. Ideas can be adapted to suit a range of classes. The documents on the IPPEA website will underpin the content (IPPEA Members Area- Information Sheets-2012-2013 Articles on Endurance, Strength, Flexibility, Co-ordination & Speed). This workshop will be indoors. It will promote maximum physical activity and muscular strength development.
Title: Orienteers Run The Country
Presenter: Conchúr Ó Muimhneacháin
Organisation: DES Associate
This workshop supports the engagement of children with maps and with physical activity through the medium of orienteering. You will be introduced to a number of progressive steps in nurturing map-reading skills and promoting healthy outdoor activity as part of a broad-based quality physical education programme. The workshop will take place outdoors.
Title: Yoga Gym
Presenter: Ciara Delaney
Organisation: IPPEA Commitee
This playful and informative workshop invites you to run, hop, stretch, wiggle, twist and bend! The workshop will be delivered by a primary school teacher who will demonstrate how to present yoga to children through games and child-friendly sequences as part of the Gymnastics Strand. We will explore fun and innovative ways to present gymnastics skills using acro-yoga techniques and group work, before finishing with a guided relaxation practice. By maintaining the element of fun and providing opportunities for self-expression, imagination, and relaxation, classroom yoga breaks could help children to stay alert, calm and receptive throughout the day.

Presented by Caoimhe Doherty and Derek Brennan
Organisation: IPPEA Commitee members
This workshop presents a variety of simple, easy and practical athletics ideas suitable for Junior classes to Senior Classes. Throwing, jumping, running and having fun all included! Warm up and Fundamental movement activities included.
