Arts in Action welcomes from Granada, Spain, Flamenco dancer Irene ‘La Serranilla’ with Huelvan Fandango singer, Cristina Soler and guitarist, Alejandro Gonzalez Moreno

Irene, Cristina & Alejandro will perform the premiere spectacle of Andalusian flamenco music and dance at NUI Galway. A show in three sections, Irene will also provide some historical and cultural context for the performance in english.

A ‘bailatriz’ or dancer-actress, Irene is originally from the north of Spain, she travelled to Andalucia to train with some of the greatest flamenco dancers on the national scene. From the locus point of historic Granada, she has toured internationally, and regularly participates at a number of dance festivals. Irene runs a school of flamenco and dances with the Granada Flamenco Ballet (Ballet Flamenco de Granada).

Cristina, or María Cristina Soler Gago as she was born, grew up surrounded by the rich Huelvan flamenco culture. She began singing in her local fandango style at a young age and has won numerous awards, including first prize for her ‘Cantes de Levante’ at the 33rd Lo Ferro International Festival of Flamenco Singing in Murcia. Authentic Spanish guitar will be provided by Irene’s regular collaborator, Alejandro Gonzalez Moreno

This performance will be accompanied by a lecture from Massimo Cattaneo, NUIG Spanish Department, on the ‘History of Flamenco’ at 5pm in the Moore Institute.
