The Embassies of Ireland to Denmark and Sweden are delighted to be hosting a live bake-along with special guest and chef, Neven Maguire

About this event

The origins of Halloween can be traced to Ireland and the pagan festival of Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It was said that at this time of the year the veils of the world were thinner and the occasion was celebrated with bonfires, mask wearing and carved lanterns. Many of these traditions were brought to the United States by Irish emigrants in the 19th Century. Bairín Breac or Bambrack is a traditional Irish fruit cake eaten at Halloween. The barmbrack often contains a number of symbolic objects, most commonly a ring - the person who receives the slice with the ring is said to get married that year. We’d like to think it could be the new banana bread of 2020!

Neven Maguire is a beloved, award-winning Irish chef who has worked in many Michelin star restaurants across Europe. In 2015 he was inducted into the prestigious Food & Wine Magazine Awards ‘Hall of Fame’ for his years of commitment and dedication to the Irish food industry. Neven is the owner and Head Chef of McNean House and Restaurant, one of Ireland's favourite restaurants. Neven is the author of over 12 cookbooks and regularly makes appearances on Ireland's national broadcaster, RTÉ.

While we cannot see you in person, we still really value the sense of community and would love for you, your family and friends to bake along with us on the evening. Much like the Irish emigrants who brought their traditions to the United States in the 19th century, we think we can bring them to the Nordics in the 21st.

We will send a list of ingredients in advance, along with a Zoom link and instructions. Places will be limited and on a first come, first serve basis. After the event, we hope you’ll send us some photos of your creations, and there will be prizes for some of the spookiest snaps!

Looking forward to seeing you and sharing a slice of brack and cup of tea over Zoom!
