The sound of a Joe Henry record is unmistakable... There's richness to the instruments, as well as depth and warmth that help set his work apart. - NPR

Audacious and auspicious…akin to Van Morrison at his most impressionistic - American Songwriter

Acclaimed American singer, songwriter and Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry has announced a string of solo performances in Ireland this coming fall. In Henry’s own words:

Courtesy of a late-summer production project in Dublin ––followed by a rare and kind invitation to be writer-in-residence at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan on the wild west coast–– I shall be spending this autumn in Ireland; and as such, have decided to meet the opportunity in full and undertake a series of small acoustic shows while there. As I do, I will share the evenings with my friend Tony Trundle –– an heroically great and under-heard singer/songwriter originally from Belfast, now living the Burren region.

I look forward to learning how a writing period on the Emerald Isle will impact my songs and performances, and as well, how the opportunity of these shows will influence my songwriting.

These dates in Ireland follow the release last year of Henry’s 14th solo album Thrum.

Recorded, as well as mixed, live to tape by Ryan Freeland (Bonnie Raitt, The Milk Carton Kids, Ray LaMontagne) over four days at Hollywood's legendary United Studios, the album's 11 spiritually stirring originals feature longtime Henry collaborators Jay Bellerose (drums), Levon Henry (saxophone and all reeds), David Piltch (upright and electric bass), John Smith (guitar; backing vocals), Patrick Warren (piano, keys), as well as a string quartet and Asa Brosius on pedal steel.

The resulting album is an intricately crafted collection of recordings by one of the most gifted and moving songwriters today.

Henry, also an in-demand producer, has recently produced new albums for the late Allen Toussaint, Lizz Wright, and Joan Baez. Henry will mount a U.S. tour this fall featuring longtime collaborators Bellerose, Piltch, Warren and Levon – all of whom appear on Thrum.

About Joe Henry

Joe Henry is an American songwriter, producer, writer, and poet. He has worked with an incredibly diverse range of musicians—from Elvis Costello to Ornette Coleman to Richie Havens—earning multiple Grammys as a producer along the way. A hyperliterate storyteller, he draws an author's eye for the overlooked detail across a broad swath of American musical styles -- folk, rock, jazz and blues -- rendering genre modifiers useless.
