Event description

Description

Situated within Millmount's Cultural Quarter, the eloquant late 18th century townhose turned venue of Richmond Fort serves as the setting for an enriching evening of contemporary folk music.

----------

Kern, local champions of contemporary folk and traditional influences, are comprised of SJ McArdle (guitar and vocals), Brendan McCreanor (uilleann pipes) and Barry Kieran (fiddle). Each are established in their own craft, but when brought together produce a sound which is worthy of critical acclaim within the evolving boundaries of traditional Irish music.

The band has released a debut album, False Deceiver, produced by Trevor Hutchinson (Lúnasa, The Waterboys). It is a mix of songs and tunes from the band’s home County of Louth along original material and has already garnered significant national airplay in Ireland (including RTE Lyric FM and Radio 1), including live appearances on Newstalk’s Pat Kenny Show and Raidio na Gaeltachta.

More recently Kern released a single, “Till the Docklands Drown”, produced by Donal O’Connor (Ulaid, At First Light). The song was featured in the IFTA-winning Element Pictures movie A Date for Mad Mary.

The band has toured extensively in the past year and has just won the 2018 TradFest Temple Bar Showcase and will be heading for Milwaukee Irish Fest in August.

----------

Opening the evening will be Drogheda's own Gene Carolan. Gene is a local songwriter and active musician on the Drogheda music scene. He is usually flanked by his two siblings in the local group, the Carolan Brothers, which started off as a Neil Young tribute band, but soon garnered a reputation of its own due to the brothers' distinctive harmonies.

The band released their first EP, Equinox, in 2014, receiving praise for their stripped-back approach and attention to songcraft. In the years since, Gene has continued to write, debuting a number of new songs at the Maritime Festival last year, in support of the Heathers. Expect a balanced mix of old and new at Richmond Fort, as Gene attempts to plot a course for the year to come.
