About this event

“The story, our own, is a shared one, of the lines and circles of the land we know, of the sorrow it has known and of our own white moth of memory.”

- Kerri ní Dochartaigh, Thin Places

Thin Places is a potent mixture of memoir, history and nature writing in which author Kerri ní Dochartaigh explores how nature kept her sane and helped her heal, how violence and poverty are never more than a stone's throw from beauty and hope. It is a brave, raw and searingly honest memoir that is set against the backdrop of Derry at the height of the Troubles and is written with a poetic ferocity that is at once riveting and heartbreaking.

Incomparable when reading her own work, Kerri will also be joined in conversation by the distinguished writer Eoin McNamee whose work also explores the hidden history of the Troubles.

Kerri ní Dochartaigh was born in 1983, in Derry-Londonderry at the border between the North and South of Ireland. Her work has appeared in the Irish Times, Winter Papers, Caught by the River and others. She lives in an old railway cottage in the very heart of Ireland with her partner and their new baby. Thin Places is her first book.

“A Derry writer’s powerful, unflinching account of her war-torn childhood and her quest for peace is part hymn to nature, part Troubles memoir.” - The Guardian

“What was Kerri ní Dochartaigh’s burden as a child – to exist in “the gaps between” the Catholic and Protestant communities in Northern Ireland – has become her gift as a writer. She is sensitive to the legacies of loss and trauma and highly attuned to the gifts of the natural world and the possibilities of place. This is a special, beautiful, many-faceted book” - Amy Liptrot

Glencree Centre is a fully accessible venue.
