Online training seminar for people starting out in careers in archiving and records management.

About this Event

The Archives and Records Association, Ireland (ARA,I) is pleased to present an online training seminar for current archival students and new professionals across Ireland and the UK.

The event is aimed at anyone embarking on a career in archives and records management and will provide insight into various aspects of the profession as well as advice on career progression and professional development.

The training event will feature four 30-minute presentations from established archives professionals who will cover topics such as advocacy, project management, and the effects of the pandemic on career development.

Carly Randall from the V&A Archives and Registry will be talking about potential approaches records professionals could take when deciding how to adapt to the effects of the pandemic on their career development.

Deirdre McParland from ESB Archives will be sharing her experiences of life as a business archivist and exploring the necessary skillsets and vital role of advocacy and stakeholder engagement in the archives profession.

Cécile Gordon from the Military Archives of Ireland will be discussing aspects of archival project management, while drawing on her experiences of managing the Military Service (1916-1923) Pensions Collection/Project since 2008.

Kieran O'Leary from the National Library of Ireland will be talking about his career in digital preservation and be providing advice about how to progress in this field.

We will also be facilitating an optional networking coffee break in between sessions, which will give you the chance to get to know some of the other attendees at the event.

The seminar will be structured as follows:

About the Speakers

Carly Randall is Archivist at the V&A Archive and Registry. She has been Secretary for ARA’s Professional Development and Training Committee since 2018 and is currently serving her second year as Training Officer for the Section for Archives and Museums. In 2020, she started producing the SAM Podcast and featured on panels for the Fair Museum Jobs Careers Summit.

Deirdre McParland is Senior Archivist with ESB Archives and has over twenty years experience in the archives and heritage sector. Previously Deirdre was archivist and archive manager in the Guinness Archive, Consultant Archivist and Records Manager with Eneclann and archives administrator with GAA Museum. Deirdre has published papers in the Archives and Records Association, Irish Archives Journal, Engineers Journal, Sunday Business Post, Irish Roots and Irish Central. She is a regular guest speaker, panellist at national and international conferences and accomplished media performer. Deirdre has collaborated and curated on numerous exhibitions and most recently project managed ESB Archives collection to a new purpose built archive.

Cécile Gordon is Senior Archivist at Military Archives of Ireland and is Project Manager of the Military Service (1916-1923) Pensions Collection/Project since 2008. Prior to this, Cécile was managing the archives of Wicklow, Kildare and Meath County Councils for 2 years. She was successively Regional Representative and then Chairperson of the Archives and Records Association, Ireland (2007-2012). Her areas of interest include archival theory, the impact of the work of the archivist on the nature and the use of primary sources and the place of archives in the study of personal identity, nationalism, commemorations and collective memory.

Kieran O’Leary is the Digital Preservation Manager at the National Library of Ireland. This involves working with colleagues to create and update digital preservation workflows for a variety of formats, including born digital objects. He is a digital audiovisual preservation specialist, working for almost seven years as the Data and Digital Systems Manager for the Irish Film Institute. His research interests include file format normalisation, digitisation/migration, utilising open source command line tools and microservices within digital preservation workflows. He occasionally lectures in the Digital Preservation Management course in UCD, and has worked as a freelance software developer for the California Revealed Project.

Please note, the seminar will be delivered via Zoom. Places are limited and registration for this online event will close at 6:00pm on Wednesday, 20 January after which point instructions for joining the Zoom video conference will be sent out to all ticket holders.
