Starting point is the primary school in Kilworth across the road from the church.
This year we will be donating €5 of each entry fee to the COPE Hostel in Mitchelstown. We are doing this in memory of our club member John Murphy who sadly passed away last September whilst out cycling, he was a passionate supporter of the Hostel.
Please read a note from Johns wife, Kate.
John loved life and believed in living it to the full. Everything he did he did with gusto. There were no short measured with John. He also loved his special needs brother Con and did all in his power to make sure that Con lived as full a life as he could. It was a great testament to the COPE Foundation that John entrusted the care of his beloved brother to them. And in true John fashion once Cope was caring for Con, John did all in his power to support the organisation. He was an active volunteer playing his part on the fundraising committee and bringing clients swimming in Montenotte on a weekly basis. All of this allowed him to participate in Con's life and COPE's care of Con allowed John to lead a full life himself.
In recent years John was diagnosed with diabetes which meant that it was very important for him to take regular exercise. The bicycle was his weapon of choice. He loved cycling, joined Kilworth Cycling Club, and, at least four times a week, we would head off together for a leisurely spin. Unfortunately cycling was the last thing he ever did. It was while we were out cycling on the 29th of September last that John had a sudden heart attack and died on the road. It was very shocking but in hindsight it was the way many of us would like to go, doing something we loved to the very end.
This year Kilworth Cycling Club is honouring John by dedicating the annual cycling event to him and donating the proceeds to his charity of choice, COPE. He would be deeply touched by the thoughtfulness of the club members and very thankful to all the participants part of whose entry fees will be donated to COPE in Mitchelstown. It is wonderful for me to see John being so fondly and respectfully remembered, and to see the good that John was intent on doing continuing in his name after his untimely death.
On behalf of myself, our daughter Claire, her husband Gordon and our grandchildren Hannah and Leo, I would like to thank you all for your kindness and wish everyone a safe and thoroughly enjoyable day on the 16th of August.
Please register above and pay on the day (€20). We look forward to seeing you all there !
