Event description
An International conference on Kylie Minogue, Maynooth University, Ireland

About this Event

Kylie Minogue is an international pop star, with over 80 million record sales worldwide. This international academic conference at Maynooth University aims to critically examine the Australian pop diva’s status as an enduring pop music star from a range of approaches and academic disciplines including popular music studies, media studies, cultural studies, celebrity studies and queer studies. With a career spanning 30 years – recently marked by a stand out performance at Glastonbury’s ‘Legend’ slot – Kylie has given the late 20th century and early 21st century some of its most iconic pop songs and videos from “Confide in Me and “Spinning Around” to “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” , “All the Lovers”. Minogue’s status as audio-visual pop star, as a female singer with a capacity for reinvention whose decades-long career shows little sign of slowing down, as well as a gay icon, celebrity, and cancer-survivor, mark her out as a distinctive popular figure and invite critical appraisal. This two-day international symposium, the first of its kind, brings together scholars and writers from Ireland, the UK, France, Mexico, and the US, to explore Kylie as artist, as gay icon, as performer. Papers also address Minogue’s location in and negotiation of the contemporary music and culture industry, especially in relation to questions of age, voice, liveness and her status as a cancer survivor.
