The Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) and the All Party Oireachtas Interest Group on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, in association with the DCU School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health, are pleased to launch the flagship annual State of World Population report of the UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency.

The 2023 State of World Population report, 8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: The case for rights and choices, calls for a radical rethink of how population numbers are framed, as new research reveals considerable population anxiety. The report emphasises the importance of rights-based approaches to population, in line with the goal of ensuring bodily autonomy, rights and choices for all.

This report could not be more timely. In 2024, the international community commemorates the 30-year anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Held in Cairo in 1994, this landmark international conference transformed global thinking on population and development issues and defined a bold agenda, placing people’s dignity and rights at the heart of sustainable development.

The event begins at 12.00 noon on Tuesday the 14th of November in room HG22 at DCU School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health. Registration opens at 11:45, accompanied by coffee and pastries.
