About this event
"Leaping Lesbians" and other breakaway pop hits: A journey through "women's music".
In this talk, musicologist Dr Ann-Marie Hanlon (NUI Galway) will take you on a journey through the lesbian-feminist women's music movement, which originated in the United States in the early 1970s. Through songs such as "Everywoman Can be a Lesbian", "Ode to a Gym Teacher" and "Angry Atthis", you'll discover what happened when the politics of women's liberation and gay liberation collided in the creation of an alternative music industry with the primary aims of smashing the patriarchy and promoting lesbian voices in music. One of the most politically influential musical movements you have perhaps never have heard of, it has fostered generations of feminist artists including Tracy Chapman, the Indigo Girls and Ani diFranco.
All welcome!
