Description

Cork Concert Orchestra are delighted to present ‘Legends of West End & Broadway’ at City Hall Cork on June 29th 2019. For this very special concert the full orchestra will be joined by two true legends of the musical world Ruthie Henshall and John Owen-Jones. This promise to be a wonderful trip through some of the world’s most memorable musicals, performed by two globally recognised stars of musical theatre.

Ruthie Henshall has appeared in Cats and Miss Saigon as Ellen. She created the role of Aphra in Children of Eden. She then took over as Fantine in the West End production of Les Misérables at the Palace Theatre, and performed this role at the 10th Anniversary ‘Dream Cast’ concert in a cast including Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, Lea Salonga. Her appearance in Crazy For You (nominated for an Olivier Award) at the Prince Edward Theatre established her as one of the most popular stars in the West End. Later roles included Nancy in Oliver! (London Palladium), She Loves Me (Savoy Theatre; her first Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical), and Roxie in Chicago (voted the 'Most Popular Musical Actress of the past 25 years' by Theatregoers). Appearances in New York included Ziegfeld Follies of 1936 and the plays The Vagina Monologues and The Other Woman. After three years in New York, she returned to London to star in Peggy Sue Got Married and from 2014-2016 Ruthie played the role of Mrs Wilkinson in the West End production of Billy Elliot. She created the title role in Marguerite, and was Elvira in Blithe Spirit. In concert she has toured the UK, USA and Australia. Recordings include 'The Ruthie Henshall Album'. Her book So You Want To Be In Musicals was published in 2012; in 2013 she toured the UK with her show 'An Intimate Evening with Ruthie Henshall'

John Owen-Jones is a record-breaking West End and Broadway actor and singer. John is best known for his critically acclaimed and award-winning performances as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. In the UK, John has performed extensively in theatre, appeared on television and radio, and performed in concert around the world. John remains the youngest actor in West End history to have played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables (a role he also played on Broadway) and has performed as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera nearly 2000 times - more than any actor in the show’s entire West End run. John has appeared in special finales for the Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary performances at the o2 and Royal Albert Hall. He is in the unique position of being the only actor to have the opportunity to reinvent Valjean and The Phantom – in brand new Cameron Mackintosh productions that toured the UK and now touring the world to great acclaim. In an online poll, John was voted the “Best Ever Valjean” and “Best Ever Performer in Les Miserables" by fans of the show worldwide; his performance as Valjean can be heard on the ‘Les Miserables Live!’ Album. He recently played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at Dubai Opera, Dubai. John has released four solo albums. ‘Hallelujah’ EP (2006) 'John Owen-Jones' (2009), 'Unmasked' (2011) ‘Rise’ (2015) and ‘Bring Him Home’ (2017). John released his new album ‘Spotlight’ in February 2019
