Event description

Description

Portobello was once a thriving Jewish quarter, from 1880s when thousands of litvaks (Lithuanian Jews) arrived as our first sizeable immigrant community, until 1970s when the residents moved on due to upward mobility and emigration to the state of Israel. This small community peaked at 4,500 but produced figures like Chaim Herzog (6th President of Israel), Robert Briscoe (TD and Mayor of Dublin) and Ettie Steinberg (only Irish citizen killed in Auschwitz). Join Alexander Vard, a historian with roots in this forgotten community, on a unique walking your of the Portobello area which will always be remembered as 'Little Jerusalem'. [60 min]
