One day course on the welfare and first aid of live stranded cetaceans

About this event

The course will include decision making on what is, the most appropriate response, first aid to stabilize the animal and re-floating techniques.

The course includes a classroom based theoretical session in the morning followed by a practical session on Fintra Beach, Co. Donegal where participants will be trained how to safely move and manipulate a cetaceans body weight on a beach using a life sized dolphin replica. During the practical session participants will be asked to demonstrate and their learning by completing different potential scenarios covered in the mornings theory session.

IWDG live stranding course is an accredited course open to all.

Cost:

€ 30 for members refreshing their knowledge. Must have completed the course before.

€50 for active IWDG members

€80 for non-members

Following this course participants will be aware of current best practice an hopefully the confidence to make an informed decision if ever face to face with a beached whale or dolphin.

Please note, participants should bring a wet or dry suit if intending to enter the water. Lunch is not provided, however, time will be given for lunch.

Registered participants will be contacted by the IWDG via email the week of the planned course date with a schedule of events. If you can not attend the event, you must contact the event coordinator at sibeal.regan@iwdg.ie no later than 48 hours before the event to be eligible for a refund.
