Event description

Description

In the spirit of the 1960’s Scratch Orchestra, join us at Science Gallery Dublin for a day of music exploration with a hands-on music instrument workshop and short improvisatory rehearsal and performance. Each orchestra will be led by an Irish composer in conjunction with Dabbledoo Music and The Contemporary Music Centre. For this workshop, no instrumental skills are not necessary, nor the ability to read music – merely curiosity and the wish to make and play music.

The Scratch Orchestra grew out of a series of music composition classes held at London’s Morley College. The classes were instigated by Cornelius Cardew, Michael Parsons and Howard Skempton and were attended by avant-garde musicians and artists interested in exploring sound. From this, in July 1969, the Scratch Orchestra was formed; it was described, in its draft constitution, as “a large number of enthusiasts pooling their resources (not primarily material resources) and assembling for action (music making, performance, edification.)”

No experience required but this event is strictly over 15s.
