Event Details

Presenters: • Dr Naomi Winstone, Department of Higher Education, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK. Dr Robert Nash, Department of Psychology, Aston University, Birmingham, UK. Learning

It is widely acknowledged that feedback is one of the most important influences on learning (Hattie & Timperley 2007). This is of particular importance during transition to HE when students are adjusting to the challenges of learning in college (Y1 Feedback, 2016a). Many common barriers to engagement with feedback are exacerbated in the context of a transitional period.

This seminar will explore how a systemic approach to developing students’ ‘feedback literacy’ upon entry to higher education can support the development of self-regulated learning. In particular, the facilitators will use the DEFT (Winstone and Nash, 2016) to explore concepts relating to students’ active engagement with feedback. Participants will be introduced to a range of activities from DEFT to support student engagement with feedback with an emphasis on the potential for learning technology to support engagement with feedback. How tools and interventions can be effectively co-designed with students using a participatory approach will also be explored.

In this seminar, participants will be supported to construct a framework representing the key barriers to students’ use of assessment feedback in the first year of a HE programme. The facilitators will encourage debate around the role of lecturers in supporting students’ assessment and feedback literacies during the transition.

In this seminar, participants will have the opportunity to:

  1. Consider how to support students develop feedback literacies and the potential for learning technologies to support engagement
  2. Implement a range of activities to support student engagement in feedback based on the Developing Engagement with Feedback Toolkit
  3. Engage with colleagues in the development of a shared understanding of feedback literacies
  4. Justify and assist in embedding feedback when designing programmes and modules
