Event description
Workshop: 'What I wish I knew about supporting students with anxiety when I was a teacher'- by a Psychologist.

About this event

A little about me...

I spent 10 years teaching in a large special school at both primary and secondary level, including in ASD specific classes. I was also DLP for 5 years and worked closely with TUSLA and vulnerable children and families.

I always had an interest in psychology and completed by degree part time while teaching. In 2020 I changed careers and now work as an Assistant Psychologist in a child and family service for the HSE.

What I know from my time as a teacher:

  • We are not adequately trained to support students with mental health issues, but we really want to do what we can.
  • We have limited access to psychology services, which we gravely need.
  • It can be extremely difficult to support a struggling student in a class with 30 others.
  • We do not have time to implement individual interventions or programs.
  • Teaching can be stressful, draining, distressing and/or lonely at times.

What this workshop entails:

The aim of the workshop it to share with you what I have learnt and wish I knew when I was teaching. It will cover:

  • What is anxiety? How to recognise it and the different ways it can present.
  • Reflection, self awareness and co-regulation are you most powerful tools! Learn more about how to develop and use these skills.
  • How to respond effectively to a child experiencing anxiety (including panic attacks).
  • Exploring a variety of practical and time effective anxiety reducing activities to incorporate into your day.
  • Creating a safe and secure classroom to decrease anxiety.
  • Self care and compassion
  • A pack of useful worksheets

I feel passionately that teachers and SNA already have the skills, talent and compassion to support students experiencing mental health difficulties- we just need the information and support!

The workshop will have a maximum of 30 people to enable reflective discussion. For further information email susanquainpsych@gmail.com. Follow me on Twitter @SuegoodySusan or LinkedIn for updates on future webinars and workshops on psychology and mental health in the classroom.

Hopefully see you there!
