Mayo Landmark Challenge

About this Event

6 x Activities, 7 x Days, 3 x Awards, 1x County .......Mayo Landmark Challenge

Mayo Sport Partnership is inviting you to take part in 'Mayo's Landmark Challenge' a weeklong event consisting of a seven day challenge in the following activities:

• Walking

• Running

• Hiking

• Cycling

• Swimming

• Water Paddle Sports

The distance of each challenge has been set in relation to iconic monuments around the county. Participants are asked cover the distance, then upload a photo to social media with the #EWOS and #BeActive. If participants choose to do the challenge for real, then they should take the necessary precautions in doing so.

Complete a challenge to receive:

• Gold Award Certificate

• Silver Award Certificate

• Bronze Award Certificate

Challenges can be done in two categories either Solo or Team. Team entries consist of 2 or more people, so why not do the challenge with family, friends, and work or club colleagues. Solo entries in the interest of safety, are encourage to partake with a friend and as long as all parties complete the acquired distance of each challenge It can be can counted in the Solo category.

SIX ACTIVITIES

-WALKING CHALLENGE -

As with all our challenges for European Week of Sport Mayo Sport Partnership is tying each activity with an iconic part Co Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Sport Ireland invites you to take the challenge of walking of distance of 26km during the European Week of Sport. This would be the equivalent of trekking through Ireland’s largest wilderness the Bangor Trail,

• 26km starting at Bangor Erris to Letterkeen

• Complete the distance virtually and close to you home on routes your familiar with

• Complete the 26km within the week

• Experienced hiker encouraged to tackle Way Marked Trails around Mayo or the Bangor Trail itself

• 3.5km per day for 7 days

• What way will you do it?

Three Awards

Gold Award Complete a Challenge Solo. This can also be group people walking together as long as everyone completes the 26km

Silver Award completed as a team of no more than 4 people. Each member of the team complete a section of the distance and when combined distance is added together it add up to 26km

Bronze Award completed as a team of 5 or more people. Each member of the team complete a section of the distance and when combined distance is added together it add up to 26km

-RUNNING CHALENGE-

As with all our challenges for European Week of Sport Mayo Sport Partnership is tying each activity with an iconic part Co Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Sport Ireland invites you to take the challenge of running 26miles or a marathon in a week. This would be the equivalent of running the distance between the counties two largest towns Castlebar to Ballina.

• Castlebar to Ballina virtually

• Virtually Completed, close to you home on routes your familiar

• Complete the 26miles (42km) within the week

• 6km per day for 7 days

• What way will you do it?

Three Awards

Gold Award Complete the Challenge Solo. This can also be group people running together as long as everyone completes the 26miles distance

Silver Award completed as a team of no more than 4 people. Each member of the team complete a section of the distance and when combined distance is added together it add up to 26miles

Bronze Award completed as a team of 5 or more people. Each member of the team complete a section of the distance and when combined distance is added together it add up to 26miles

-HIKING CHALLENGE -

As with all our challenges for European Week of Sport Mayo Sport Partnership is tying each activity with an iconic part Co Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Sport Ireland invites you to take the challenge of hiking (real or virtually) the following Mountains. To complete the challenge virtually hike the distance noted beside each Mountain.

• Mweelrea(19km)

• Neiphin(16km)

• Crough Patrick (14km)

• What way will you do it?

Three Awards

Gold Award: Complete the Challenge of climbing Mweelra. Suitable for experienced climbers only

Silver Award: Complete the Challenge of climbing Neiphin. Suitable for experienced climbers only

Bronze Award: Complete the Challenge of climbing Crough Patrick from Murrisk carpark. Suitable for all abilities. Virtually complete the distance of any of the mountains over the week (either solo or as part of a team) to receive a Bronze Award

When participating in any activities in wilderness areas please remember the Golden Rule of “Less than 3 there should never be!”. If you require assistance at any point while attempting any challenge call 112 or 999 and ask for Mountain Rescue or the Coast Guard

-SWIMMING CHALLENGE-

As with all our challenges for European Week of Sport Mayo Sport Partnership is tying each activity with an iconic part Co Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Sport Ireland invites you to take the challenge of swimming 11km which is equivalent distance from Roonagh Pier Lousbourgh on the mainland to Clare Island and back. To complete the challenge virtually swim the distance either in a local pool or in open waters with friends

• From the main land to the iconic jewel of Clew Bay Clare Island and back is 6 nautical miles or 11km

• Open water swimmers remember less than 3 there should never be

• Please use beaches with life guards and designated swimming zones

• Never swim alone

• What way will you do it?

Three Awards

Gold Award: Complete the Challenge solo in a week indoor pool or outdoor. This can also be group people walking together as long as everyone completes the 11km

Silver Award: Complete the Challenge distance in a group of 2-4

Bronze Award: Complete the Challenge distance in a group of 5 or more

When swimming in open water please remember the Golden Rule of “Less than 3 there should never be!”. If you require assistance at any point while attempting any challenge call 112 or 999

-CYCLING CHALLENGE -

As with all our challenges for European Week of Sport Mayo Sport Partnership is tying each activity with an iconic part Co Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Sport Ireland invites you to take the challenge of cycling 45km which is equivalent distance from Westport to Achill Island. To complete the challenge virtually cycle the distance close to home on roads your familiar with or take to the World famous Great western Green Way and do the challenge for real

• Westport to Achill 45km

• Always wear a helmet and a high vis-vest

• Cycle with a group and obey the rules of the road

• What way will you do it?

Three Awards

Gold Award: Complete the Challenge solo in a week. This can also be group people walking together as long as everyone completes the required distance

Silver Award: Complete the Challenge distance in a group of 2-4

Bronze Award: Complete the Challenge distance in a group of 5 or more

When cycling on the open road always obey the rules of the road, cycle two a breast and wear the appropriate safety equipment

-PADDLE SPORTS CHALLENGE-

As with all our challenges for European Week of Sport Mayo Sport Partnership is tying each activity with an iconic part Co Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Sport Ireland invites you to take the challenge to kayak, canoe, paddle board 16km which is the equivalent of paddling the length of Lough Mask which is Mayo's largest lake . To complete the challenge virtually distance the distance at your own leisure on a water way you are familiar with

• The lenght of Mayo's largest lake Lough Mask

• Remember when venturing out on water less than 3 there should never be

• Now your location and weather condition

• Always wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) or life jacket when around water

• Always bring a mobile and waterproof case when venturing out on water

• Paddle safe and paddle with friends

• What way will you do it?

Three Awards

Gold Award: Complete the Challenge as an individual. This can also be group people paddling together as long as everyone completes the required distance

Silver Award: Complete the Challenge distance in a group of 2-4 (team effort)

Bronze Award: Complete the Challenge distance in a group of 5 or more (Combined effort)
