About this event

This is the first Medico-Legal Society Academic Day to be held in three years. The conference will take place on Saturday, 25th February 2023 at The Honorable Society of Kings Inns.

Following the recent High Court Judgment of Duffy v McGee [2020] IEHC 70, (Cross J.) and upheld on appeal by the Court of Appeal: Duffy v. McGee [2022] IECA254 (Noonan J, Binchy J & Collins J), this year’s theme will be 'Expert Evidence’ . The academic day will focus on the professional standards expected when giving evidence . We have an excellent line up of experienced practitioners and speakers. The morning will open with papers by Mr. Justice Maurice Collins, Judge of the Supreme Court, Prof Declan Keane, and Ms. Elizabeth Maguire SC (recently nominated to become a Judge of the Circuit Court). They will set out the background by looking at recent developments in Irish Courts and review the duties of an expert witness.

The second half of the morning will be less theoretical, and more practical, when we will hear guidance from experienced medical and legal practitioners, along with advice from the Medical Protection Society. A Q&A session will be followed by lunch at the Kings Inns. This promises to be a highly informative and educational morning, which has been approved for 3.5 External CPD Points.
