Event Descriptor

Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the most common cause of death in Ireland. Stopping cancer before it starts and detecting it early are the keys to survival.

The goal of this session is to raise awareness amongst men of the signs and symptoms of prostate, testicular and bowel cancer so as to increase the chances of early detection and to help men make appropriate lifestyle changes that can help reduce their risk of cancer.

Biography

Bernie Carter is an Assistant Director of Nursing with the Marie Keating Foundation and she has over 25 years’ experience working in oncology in Ireland, UK, Australia and Canada. She spent over 10 years in Vancouver where she worked at a senior level in the British Columbia Cancer Agency. Bernie took her oncology training in the Royal Marsden in the UK and the Peter MacCallum hospital in Melbourne, Australia. She also has an MSc from Trinity College Dublin with a master thesis in oncology. She has presented in cancer awareness for almost 20 years and is passionate about empowering individuals with the knowledge to care for their own health which in turn will help to decrease the rate of cancer diagnosis or help diagnosis cancer at an early stage. Prevention is ideally the best but if cancer is diagnosed at an early stage the outcome is generally going to be better.
