INISHOWEN TRADITIONAL MUSIC PROJECT -SUMMER CONCERT SERIES 2018

Michael Gallanagh and Jim McFarland with special guests

Séamus McGuire and Sean Lee

Michael Gallanagh

Michael is one of the most innovative and dynamic guitarists in traditional music and his unique versions of old Irish songs have earned him the respect of music lovers far and wide. Michael lived for many years in London and Paris playing with many of the leading musicians including the legendary fiddler Sean Maguire, Vincent Blin, Tom Byrne and Dinny McLaughlin. Michael was guest on a Disney Bluegrass CD a number of years ago and has made many appearances on TV and Radio. Now living in his home town of Buncrana he enjoys music sessions with many local musicians including Roisin Harrigan, Seamus Maguire, John Lee, Barry and Rona McLaughlin and Liz Doherty.

Jim McFarland

Jim is one of Ireland’s finest traditional singers, with a voice and repertoire admired by many. He has travelled extensively, guesting in Ireland, the UK, Europe, North America and Canada. His talent also lies in collecting and is no stranger to Inishowen, having co-produced with Jimmy McBride ‘My Parents Reared Me Tenderly’ a collection of Inishowen songs in the 1980s. Jim runs a singing session in Derry and is a stalwart supporter of the Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle. He has produced 1 solo CD, 1 CD with Jackie Boyce and has featured on a number of compilation CDs.

Jim’s daughter Maria and Michael's daughter Alice will join them in song during the evening.

Séamus McGuire and John Lee will provide the tunes on this very special evening. Given that Dunree Fort was originally built to defend Lough Swilly during the Napoleonic wars the venue will provide an ideal setting for an evening of songs and tunes that will feature some Napoleonic songs along with local songs and tunes.

Séamus McGuire

A native of Sligo but based in Letterkenny, Co.Donegal since 1984, Séamus McGuire is recognized as one of Irelands most versatile fiddlers. A founder member of “The West Ocean String Quartet”, he is also part of the world-renowned band “Buttons & Bows” with Jackie Daly, his brother Manus McGuire and Garry O’Briain. Séamus is also part of the McGuire Lee fiddle and flute duet along with Leitrim flute-player, John Lee. In May 2018, Séamus and John released their second duet album -The Legacy of Stephen Grier- to great critical acclaim.

John Lee

One of the finest living exponents of the vibrant Leitrim style of flute-playing, John Lee is held in the highest regard as a flute-player and teacher of traditional Irish music. In 1977 he met Sligo fiddle-player Seamus McGuire while on a concert tour of Canada and the US with Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann. This meeting resulted in a close musical collaboration and the recording in 1990 of their album, The Missing Reel / An Ríl ar Lár - a collection of fiddle and flute music mainly from South Leitrim which was critically acclaimed. Seamus and John’s much-anticipated second album, The Legacy of Stephen Grier was released in May 2018. This new album celebrates the unpublished nineteenth-century collection of tunes transcribed by Stephen Grier who lived at Gortletteragh in South Leitrim close to John Lee’s homeplace at Aughavas.
