Event Details

Architecting Data-Driven Applications and ISV Services on Microsoft Azure and SQL Azure. This bootcamp is aimed at CIOs, Architects, and Developers looking to understand the best cloud-based patterns and the “how” and “why” of using them.

Conor Cunningham

Conor Cunningham is a Principal Architect on the SQL team at Microsoft. He has expertise in Query Optimization, Data Warehousing, large scale system design, distributed systems architecture, performance tuning, and cloud architectures. Recently, he has been working with the CAT team to on-board some of the largest and most challenging customers to work on SQL Azure (aka Windows Azure SQL Database). He is based in Austin, Texas but works out of Redmond, Washington (with the core SQL engineering team).

Ewan Fairweather

Ewan Fairweather is a Senior Program Manager in the Customer Advisory Team, part of the Azure product group which produces technologies including; Compute, Networking, Storage, Windows Fabric, and Cloud Engineering Systems. Ewan focuses on the architecture and deployment of large-scale distributed Azure applications. Over the years, Ewan has specialized in the design and implementation of Enterprise Scale OLTP and Integration systems. Ewan works closely with the engineering teams that are planning enhanced capabilities in future versions of the product.

This session is a “deep dive” set of talks designed to give someone with experience building SQL Server-based applications a quick “how-to” on the model needed to build large-scale cloud-based data applications that work on the Microsof Azure platform.

These talks contain the wisdom acquired from on-boarding the biggest applications and services to run in the cloud at massive scales (far beyond what a traditional application could ever achieve). The talk will cover:

  • Architectural patterns for application and data tiers
  • Sharding models.
  • Distributed systems algorithms.

You will learn how to build internet-facing ISV services that work with millions+ of customers with continued uptime often not possible in traditional application patterns used in on-premises applications.

SQL Server Ireland User Group

The SQL Server Ireland User Group was founded in 2006 to foster & grow the Irish SQL Server community while providing networking opportunities & sharing experiences using SQL Server.

This group is a local chapter of PASS - The Professional Assosciation for SQL Server (

Meetings are held most months, usually in the evening of the first Tuesday of the month. We do collaborate with others to support larger conference events from time to time; including the highly successful SQL Saturdays.
