Description

We are pleased to invite to you to the first of our MLI Media Literacy Horizon events.

These events are designed to give members an opportunity to explore topical issues and consider what the longer-term media literacy implications might be.

The focus of the first event will be 'News Literacy'. We are delighted to announce that Peter Feeney, Press Ombudsman, will moderate the panel discussion and will be joined by three excellent speakers:

  • Áine Kerr is Co-founder and COO of Neva Labs; a new Irish start-up developing solutions for people who want conscious control of their news experience. Previously, Áine led global journalism partnerships at Facebook in New York City, helping to create and execute on the Facebook Journalism Project (FJP) and News Integrity Initiative (NII). Prior to Facebook, she was Managing Editor at Storyful, a Political Correspondent and News Reporter with The Irish Independent, The Irish Examiner and The Irish Times.

  • Craig Dwyer is a digital campaigns and communications consultant and was the Social Media Director for Yes Equality during the marriage equality referendum in Ireland. Craig is an advocate for, and has direct experience of using tech to facilitate the democratic process, but is acutely aware of the challenges posed by misinformation and foreign interference. Craig was a co-founder of the Transparent Referendum Initiative, a civic-initiative that highlighted the role and impact of online advertising during political campaigns.
  • Dr Eileen Culloty is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo) at Dublin City University where she works on a number of projects including the Reuters Institute Digital News Report and JOLT: Harnessing Digital and Data Technology for Journalism. Eileen’s research examines the production and reception of factual media narratives in the context of the public sphere. Her work is published in European Journal of Communication, Studies in Documentary Film, and Critical Studies in Terrorism.
