Event description

Description

Described as one of the great gardens of the world, Mount Usher is laid out over 22 acres along the River Varty. It is a Robinsonian style garden with 32 champion trees and over 5,000 plant species, many rare and exotic planted informally along the river. Spring time heralds bulbs planted in their thousands. Apart from the many varieties of these flowers, expect to enjoy Rhododendron loderi "King George" and Magnolia x wieseneri both with scented white flowers and the beautiful copper bark of Prunus serrula among others.

Our tour will be led by Seamus O'Brien. Seamus is Head Gardener at the National Botanic Gardens at Kilmacurragh and author of In the Footsteps of Joseph Dalton Hooker, A Sikkim Adventure. Seamus has an enclopaedic knowledge of plants esecially his favourite, the rhododendron, many of which will be in flower when we visit Mount Usher.

Meet outside the Garden Information Shop at 11.00 am where our tour will commence. We expect the tour to last about 2 hours. Waterprooof footwear recommended. Avoca has a coffee shop on site.
