Mountain Skills 1 is a fun, beginner-friendly course where you learn to read & navigate map, to recognize features, distance & timing walks
About this event
This is a two-day course delivered by Wild Fullstop.
This course will allow to you – should you wish – to pursue Mountain Skills 2, and your Mountain Skills Assessment. On a more practical level, it will de-mystify the old map and compass and leave you capable of finding your way around (and home from!) the hills.
Course Dates/Time: From 9.30am-5.30pm both days (16th July and the 17th July)
Location: Meet at Leenaun Community Centre (H91 X2P7).
Cost: This course is heavily subsidized and offered at a reduced rate of €80
Please Note: Participants must register separately with Mountaineering Ireland's 'Mountain Skills Scheme' (€22). You do not have to join Mountaineering Ireland to do this, but you do need to register for the Scheme in advance of completing the course. Evidence of registration will be required before attending the course. By registering for this course you confirm that you are in good health and fitness, and acknowledge that our Mountain Skills course will take place in hillwalking and hiking terrain.
REQUIRED:
Rucksack 30-40lt - Emergency bivi bag (survival bag) - Waterproof Jacket and trousers
- Map (OS 37) scale1:50,000 - Compass Silva Type 4 (not needed for MS1 but bring it if you have one) - Torch and spare battery and bulb - Walking boots - Gaiters (optional)
- Drink – Lunch – Whistle - Hat and Gloves - Spare fleece top - Spare food
- Sunglasses and cream (seasonal) - Warm drink - Mobile phone
- 1st Aid Kit (if available)
