Description

The Children’s Rights Alliance is excited to announce a week-long programme of symposia focusing on five key areas for refugee children: early childhood education and care; mental health; community support and integration; education; and the rights of refugee and asylum seeking children.

These symposia will provide a unique opportunity to learn from leading international and national experts about best practice and research in key areas relating to child refugees. Attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify the needs of refugee children and develop timely evidence based supports, services and policies, which foster children’s inclusion and wellbeing.




Child Refugees and Early Childhood Education and Care

Saturday 13 October, St Patrick's University Hospital, James' Street, Dublin 8.
Time:10.00-4.00pm

This symposium aims to provide good practice examples to support the inclusion and wellbeing of refugee and asylum seeking children in early years settings.

Speakers will include:

Child Refugees and Mental Health

Tuesday 16 October, Academy Plaza Hotel, 10-14 Findlater Place, Upper O’Connell St, Dublin 1.
Time: 09.30 am - 1.00pm

This symposium will examine the mental health needs of refugee children and identify post migration stressors. It aims to provide examples of effective interventions for refugee and asylum-seeking children to enhance resilience and mitigate the potential negative effects of trauma.

Speakers will include:
Mina Fazel: Associate Professor, School of Psychiatry, University of Oxford.
Simone Wasmer: Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, Zentrum Überleben.
Rory Halpin: Executive Director, Spirasi.




Child Refugees and Community Integration

Wednesday 17 October, Academy Plaza Hotel, 10-14 Findlater Place, Upper O’Connell St, Dublin 1.
Time: 10.00am - 1.00pm

This symposium will draw on international evidence on the key principles to ensure migrant integration at a local level. It aims to provide examples of best practice and approaches and explore barriers to the successful integration of refugee and asylum seeking children.

Professor Mary Gilmartin: Professor of Geography, NUI Maynooth.
Leonie Kerins: Chief Executive Officer, Doras Luimní
Sally Daly: Community and Youth worker




Child Refugees and Know Your Rights

Friday 19 October, Academy Plaza Hotel, 10-14 Findlater Place, Upper O’Connell St, Dublin 1.
Time: 10.00 - 1.00pm

This interactive training will upskill people who work with refugee and asylum seeking children to respond to their legal information needs. The training will be delivered by legal experts and will focus on practical real life scenarios. Trainers to be confirmed following a needs analysis of participants.




Child Refugees and Education

Saturday 20 October, St Patrick's University Hospital, James' Street, Dublin 8.
Time: 10.00am - 4.00pm

This symposium will explore how to implement a supportive school environment and provide quality, appropriate English as an Additional Language (EAL) instruction to refugee and asylum seeking children. It aims to provide good practice examples to develop refugee children’s confidence, resilience and sense of belonging in education settings.

Jessica Farnan: Coordinator, City of Dublin Education and Training Board
