Event description

Description

We are delighted to invite Heritage Week goers to a live interview with CS Joe Mallon which will focus on CS Mallon’s Defence Forces career overseas and will take place in the auditorium of the visitor centre in Cathal Brugha Barracks. The ‘Share a story, make a connection’ theme of Heritage Week 2018 particularly resonated with us as we continue to progress the Military Archives Oral History Project which was initiated in 2015. Furthermore, as the Defence Forces commemorates 60 years of Peacekeeping overseas (1958 – 2018), the Heritage week platform offers a key opportunity to share the stories of our veterans with a wider audience. It is our privilege to host CS Mallon who will recall his overseas service with the United Nations in the Congo (1960, 1962/1963), Cyprus (1968) and Lebanon (1982) in a live interview setting. CS Mallon was a contributor to the Military Archives Oral History Project and extracts from his interview recorded in 2017 can be accessed on our website www.militaryarchives.ie. The live interview will be held in the auditorium of Cathal Brugha barracks visitor centre and will last about 45 minutes to be followed by a question and answers session. Cpl Michael Whelan, Curator Air Corps Museum and member of the MAOHP team will lead the conversation with CS Mallon and will present images and footage relevant to the themes likely to be discussed. Please be aware that Cathal Brugha barracks is a working barracks so this event is strictly confined to the visitor centre/Military Archives area of the barracks. Photography outside the visitor centre/Military Archives is not permitted. There is limited car parking in the barracks so please let us know if you wish to avail of parking at the time of your booking by emailing vehicle registration to militaryarchives@defenceforces.ie. Further information about the Military Archives Oral History Project can be accessed by visiting the Collection page on our website http://www.militaryarchives.ie/en/collections/online-collections/oral-history-project-20th-century
