NEW YORK OUR TIME (2021 : 79 mins) Dir. VIVIENNE DICK (Ire)

When Irish film artist Vivienne Dick arrived in New York’s run-down Lower East Side in the late 70s, she was deeply inspired by the vibrant community of avant-garde musicians, makers, and artists who lived there. Returning to the city in 2019, she reconnects with old haunts and friends.

Combining her own Super 8 footage of the Lower East Side from the 70s with present-day sequences of hanging out with the likes of photographer Nan Goldin, performer Lydia Lunch, post-punk feminists Bush Tetras, Dick creates a thoughtful meditation on the passing of time. Contrasting the concerns of living in New York with that of the rundown bankrupt City of the ’70s, Dick emphasises the binding importance of friendship, community, and memory.

Beautifully filmed by renowned cinematographer Declan Quinn, and edited by Connie Farrell, the film is an ethnographic look from the inside at a particular community and period in the history of a great city, and a meditation on the passing of time.

Vivienne Dick was born in Donegal, Ireland. She makes multilayered work with an interest in gender politics, music, and philosophy. Her early films are associated with the No Wave music and film movement of late seventies New York and include films such as She Had Her Gun All Ready, Guerilleres Talks and Liberty’s Booty. Initially shown at live music venues, her work was later was screened at many independent US cinemas, and at museums such as MoMA, Walker Arts Centre and the Whitney Biennale.

Organiser Jenny Keogh / Rialto Cinema Club

Organiser of NEW YORK OUR TIME (Documentary Film)

The Rialto Cinema Club, in the back room of The Circular, was set up in early 2020 by Jenny Keogh and John McMahon. It managed to squeeze in a few screenings before the world got turned upside down in March of that year. The premise of the weekly cinema night is to show feature length documentary films focusing on music, art and culture, with a lean towards Irish directors and a healthy sprinkling of International directors. It will also show a selection of short documentaries every couple of months. Jenny is a photographer, filmmaker and an avid film festival goer, with a particular passion for the documentary genre, so selecting and programming films is a pure joy and comes easy. John is the events manager at his two D8 venues, The Circular and Luckys – everything from art exhibitions, pottery classes to pub quizzes, so it was an absolute no-brainer to merge their skills to create a weekly cinema event in their local Dublin 8. Jenny’s line up of films for the September/October program is setting the bar high. The November/December program is coming soon. And here’s hoping we’ll have a free run to keep the doors open into 2022!
