The Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) is a world class orchestra, based in Limerick, renowned for its diversity, energy, its unique sound and outstanding musicianship. The orchestra was founded in 1963 by János Fürst and re-branded in 1970 as the New Irish Chamber Orchestra under Principal Conductor, André Prieur. Under Katherine Hunka‘s leadership, the Irish Chamber Orchestra has made Limerick its successful home.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the ICO to St. Patrick’s Church, Newport to mark the centenary of the Church. With the infamous Harry Clarke stain glass window as a backdrop along with the acoustic perfection of the Church, this concert will deliver the music from some of the world’s most renowned composers.

  • Vivaldi: (Concerto for 4 Violins and Cello Op. 3, No. 1 RV 549 D-major)

The spark of Vivaldi’s inflammable brilliance first ignited with L'estro armonico or The Genius of Harmony, a set of twelve concertos and one of the most influential works of its day. No. 1 oozes creativity and imagination.

  • L’Estro armonico

  • Malachy Robinson: (Dream of the Green Men)

Malachy Robinson’s new work (commissioned for this tour) invokes music both old and new, and green men both woodland and alien.

  • JS Bach: (Concerto for 2 Violins BWV 1042 in D minor)

Bach’s virtuosic Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor, known as the Double Violin Concerto, is one of his best-loved works. A fascinating dialogue emerges between the two soloists and orchestra, all sharing melodic idea and motivic fragments, to create an overall amazing sound.

  • Schubert: (Death and the Maiden arr. For strings. D810 in D Minor)

Schubert’s Death and the Maiden is one of his finest works and is a cornerstone of the repertoire. It makes for thought-provoking, refreshing listening combined with the sheer energy of the ICO’s music-making.
