Event description
non-appétit presents a pop-up culinary experience, based on a satirical Irish seaweed cookbook.

About this event

Muine Bheag Arts is delighted to present non-appétit, a pop-up culinary experience led by artist Mary O’Leary. This event will explore thought-provoking Irish seaweed recipes based on the satirical non-appétit Irish seaweed cookbook. Come along and learn how to make kelp ketchup!

Mary O’Leary is a visual artist based in Ireland who recently graduated with a BA Honours in Fine Art from Crawford College of Art and Design. Her work explores the ethical issues surrounding the exploitation of natural resources for purely commercial ends. Her practice often centres around the use of food and the culinary arts, while also including photography, screen printing and installation.

Her most recent work, non-appétit, comments on exploitative seaweed-harvesting practices in Ireland and aims to interrogate and challenge capitalist profiteering from natural Irish resources.

Grass Roots runs from 30 July - 29 August 2021. It's the first public programme initiated by artist-run organisation Muine Bheag Arts. Grass Roots refers to the act of self-organising, nurturing ideas and facilitating dialogue on a local level. The programme embeds itself deep into the soil of the community, cultivating growth from the roots up.

Grass Roots is situated in public spaces throughout Muine Bheag, Co. Carlow. Sprawling across the fields, river banks and buildings it utilises the town’s infrastructure to host a temporary network of offsite projects, public interventions and events.

The programme includes contributions from Bog Cottage, Saidhbhín Gibson, Carl Giffney, Mary O’Leary, Nollaig Molloy, Rory Mullen, Cliodhna Timoney and Katie Watchorn. The artists were invited to respond to Muine Bheag and the rural context as a space of artistic production. The works examine and investigate notions of the land, craft, industry, community and place.
