Event description

Description

Ireland's energy system has changed a lot in the past 20 years - 27% of electricity is now generated by renewables, new homes are 60% more energy efficient, and 8% of our petrol & diesel comes from biofuels - but Ireland still has a long way to go to achieve our climate and energy targets in the next 30 years. By 2050, Ireland's energy system will need to decarbonise by 80% for a minimum level of compliance; to align with the Paris Ageement, full decarbonisation approaching 100% will be required.

But what are the opportunities for Ireland in a low carbon energy transition? What are the risks and returns of technologies that are needed to decarbonize? What are the key innovations needed? What policy support should we have?

Researchers in the SFI MaREI Centre, with generous support from the NTR Foundation, have been working on an exciting project called “Our 2050 - Opportunities for Ireland In A Low Carbon Economy” to gain insights to these questions. The Our 2050 project launched in April 2016, had a mid-project event in June 2017, and will present final results on December 10th. The final event will have an innovative format which will include: flash presentations from researchers, a response from various industry and policy organisation, audience engagement and discussion, and the launch of a visualisation platform of future energy scenarios.

Please register to attend this event. We look forward to seeing you.
