Event description

Description

Political Participation has come a long way from simply casting a ballot every few years. Innovation in Participatory Budgeting and Deliberative Decision-Making combined with the rise of information technology has created tools and approaches to transform how citizens can shape political decisions.

Join us on June 8th to learn from renowned international experts and to meet the individuals who have begun to create new avenues for participation in Ireland. This is an interactive event with short contributions from the speakers to encourage audience participation and lively discussion.

Seats are limited so RSVP early!

Speakers:

- Dr. Roslyn Fuller, leading Canadian-Irish expert on IT and participatory democracy, will give an overview of the state of citizen participation in a global context

- Jez Hall of PB Partners in the United Kingdom will speak about his extensive work on instituting participatory budgeting on the local level in Scotland and around the world

- Mayor Guss O'Connell of South Dublin County Council will share his experiences in running Ireland's first participatory budgeting project "300k - Have your Say"

- Tom Arnold, former CEO of Concern and the Chairman of the 2012 Irish Constitutional Convention will give the audience an inside view of the Constitutional Convention process in Ireland

- Keith Moore, Founder of SmartVote.ie, an app which was used by more than 1/4 of a million people in the 2016 General Election to understand the policies of political candidates, will share his insights into the role of IT in advancing democratic participation

- Denis Parfenov, Co-Founder of Open Knowledge Ireland and an Open Governance board member, will speak about his organisation's efforts to improve transparency and access to public information in Ireland

This is a free event - all welcome. While lunch is not provided, the hotel has an adjoining bar area and a number of restaurants and cafes are in the close vicinity. The agenda includes a one hour break for lunch. Tea/Coffee & Snacks will be provided.
