Event description

Description

Two very special guests, Dr. Ian Robertson, Professor of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, and Niamh Gallagher, Co-Founder of Women in Politics and CEO of Drinkaware, will join Persuasion Republic for our exciting Autumn Seminar, which will take place on Wednesday, October 25th at GPO Witness Gallery, GPO, O’Connell Street.

The seminar will explore how the not-for-profit sector could be stronger and have greater influence and impact with greater gender diversity, particularly at a leadership level.

This is the first time that the issue of gender diversity and leadership has been explored for our sector in Ireland.

The idea for the seminar was born out of topline research we carried out last Spring to look at the number of women in leadership roles in the charity and not-for-profit sector. While three out of four people working in the sector is a woman (The Wheel), we found that women represent just 38% of board members and 37% of CEOs across a range of interests. While this is higher than the for-profit sector, we think that it could be greatly improved upon, particularly for a sector that actively promotes diversity and progression.

Following insightful presentations from our guest speakers, we will have a short, facilitated roundtable to explore how you think greater gender diversity at leadership level can be encouraged, supported and inspired in your own organisation, and across Ireland’s vital not-for-profit sector.

Professor Ian Robertson is a neuroscientist and a trained clinical psychologist. His widely translated books include The Stress Test and The Winner Effect, among many. In The Winner Effect he looks at how our brains deals with leadership and power. Interestingly, he explores how women’s brains react differently to power and looks at the positive role that women play in strategic leadership positions and in decision making particularly at times of crisis or change.

Niamh Gallagher was co-founder of Women for Election, an organisation to inspire and equip women to succeed in politics. She is now CEO of Drinkaware. In 2011 Niamh was the winner of the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland ‘IMPACT’ award. Before Women for Election Niamh worked as Research and Policy Analyst at the Children’s Rights Alliance in Dublin. She was also researcher at Demos, one of the UK’s leading think tanks. Niamh is a member of the Science Gallery Leonardo Group and a Board member at Women for Election.

In the true spirit of diversity, this seminar is one that should be of interest to men and women working in the sector – to listen, discuss and learn from a variety of perspectives.
