People in Agriculture Research, Practice & Policy Seminar
Overview
ABOUT: High rates of occupational injuries in agriculture persist, but not simply due to lack of knowledge. Decades of research reveal who gets hurt and how, and many farmers know someone who has suffered a serious injury or death. So where is the disconnect—the so-called "farm risk–farm safety paradox"?
This seminar explores these questions using findings from a recent needs assessment and insights from a workshop with extension and educator specialists. While farmers identified money and time as top barriers to safety practices, discussions focused largely on farmer knowledge and behaviour change interventions—reflecting a mismatch between Extension's traditional scope and the structural changes that can support improvements in farm safety. That said, this mismatch opens the door for meaningful conversations about how we support the health and safety of agricultural communities, including practical approaches that address farm communities’ material constraints
This seminar will be of interest to researchers, extension professionals, farm advisors, and policymakers working to improve agricultural health and safety.
