Positive Neuroplasticity Training with Dr Rick Hanson, PhD
Positive Neuroplasticity Training (PNT) - Build a strong, happy and healthy brain!
Intensive three day workshop on Positive Neuroplasticity
Tuesday 6 June 2017 to Thursday 8 June 2017
Join New York Times bestselling author Rick Hanson, Ph.D. for a deep experiential exploration of positive brain change – the essence of self-reliance and lasting inner strength and peace in a topsy-turvy world.
The Positive Neuroplasticity Training (PNT) teaches you how to take charge of the structure-building processes of your brain – actively inclining it towards happiness through the Taking in the Good process. By taking positive experiences, absorbing them fully, enriching them, and linking them with negative material, you can heighten their absorption and actually direct the growth of your own brain – so you can better manage stress, deal with life’s challenges, and have more to offer others!
This workshop explains powerful methods for turning passing experiences into lasting inner resources like self-compassion, mindfulness, grit, gratitude, and self-worth. It focuses on learning a fundamental psychological skill: the conversion of beneficial experiences and beneficial mental states into underlying neural traits.
This course is eminently practical, it’s focused on building skills that can be experienced in a very pragmatic way in our lives and relationships.
Who is it for? This program is open to anyone, regardless of experience. It is suitable for parents, retirees, students, executives, educators and people in helping professions. Whether you are currently a glass half-full person or a glass half-empty person, you can benefit from working with your mind in this way.
What to expect? The course consists of six sessions offered over three intensive days. The material will be explored through experiential exercises, presentations, and discussion.
You will learn how to activate positive experiences, prolong and enrich them, and then heighten their absorption into emotional memory. The active internalization of positive experiences helps us grow inner strengths, leading to psychological resources that can help with anxiety, depression, anger, addiction, disappointment, loss, loneliness, and shame – while supporting well-being, effectiveness, satisfying relationships, emotional healing, and spiritual practice.
A study on people who had participated in the PNT showed a statistically significant increase in positive emotions, self-compassion, mindfulness, emotional balance, self-esteem, gratitude, contentment, and love, as well as decreased levels of depression and anxiety.
Professional Course (PC) in the Application of Positive Neuroplasticity Training
6 day training on Positive Neuroplasticity and its professional application
** Please note that the Positive Neuroplasticity Training (6-8 June 2017) is included in the Professional Course **
Tuesday 6 June 2017 to Sunday 11 June 2017
The Professional Course is a practical, hands-on training that applies the methods of Positive Neuroplasticity to clinical, educational, human resources, and personal growth settings.
The Positive Neuroplasticity Training emphasizes the installation phase of the neurobiology of learning – the conversion of fleeting states to lasting traits. This phase - installation - is the crux of Positive Neuroplasticity. It is the "how" of developing inner resources – including resilience, mindfulness, distress tolerance, self-compassion, confidence, and other factors of peak performance. The Professional Course focuses on how participants can integrate that process into their existing modalities of expertise.
Even though the idea of installation – the transfer of activated mental states out of short-term memory buffers into long-term storage – is a well-established finding in the psychology of learning, most psychotherapists, human resources trainers, coaches, or mindfulness teachers pay little attention to it.
Who is it for? Therapists, coaches, educators, mindfulness or self-compassion teachers, doctors, nurses, and other people in the helping professions. The training is designed specifically for mental health professionals such as counselors, therapists, psychologists, and coaches who want to start integrating the content of the PNT into their work.
What to expect? Participants will learn how to teach positive neuroplasticity using Dr. Hanson’s four step HEAL process, clear old pain by linking positive and negative experiences, handle blocks, and adapt these approaches for children, trauma, and couples. The ultimate result will be increased effectiveness in their work with others.
Please note, attendance at this professional course does not qualify participants to teach the six week Positive Neuroplasticity Training. The professional course is specifically focused on the application of Positive Neuroplasticity in a professional setting.
The training is taking place at the Grand Hotel in Malahide ( www.thegrand.ie ). You can book directly via the website to get the best possible rate. A limited number of bedrooms are available at a set rate until 5 April 2017. Early booking is advised. The booking form is available via this link. Please contact the hotel directly to book a room.

Is this like psychotherapy or other treatment for a psychological condition?
No. These workshops are not a treatment for any physical or mental health condition. They are educational offerings for personal growth, and not a replacement for professional care.
While it is possible that some participants may get in touch with “negative” thoughts and feelings during the workshops, the focus of the workshop material is on having and internalizing beneficial experiences, which are typically enjoyable.
It is presumed that participants can manage their own reactions during the workshop(s) without needing personal attention from the teacher.
Will the workshops be interactive?
Yes. One of the advantages of coming in person is experiencing Rick’s teachings and presence, plus the opportunity to speak directly with Rick if you like during the breaks. Rick will also respond to individual questions during sessions. And there is of course the chance to interact and connect face-to-face with others.
How much overlap is there between the Positive Neuroplasticity Training and Rick’s other offerings (e.g., workshops, books)?
There is certainly some overlap, especially conceptually. This said, the 18-hour Positive Neuroplasticity Training distils Rick’s material down to the essence of self-directed brain change in an intensive, experiential, and comprehensive deep dive – which participants will apply to their own issues and opportunities.
If you want to get good at taking in the good – and growing the good for yourself and others – then the Positive Neuroplasticity Training is the most powerful, best way we know to do this.
Will workshop materials be available?
Yes. You will receive a hard copy of the Participant Handbook on the first day of the workshop. The Handbook includes the PowerPoint slides that Rick uses, a summary of each of the six sections in the Positive Neuroplasticity Training, background information about the brain and practical psychology, checklists you can use for six weeks of taking in the good, tips for dealing with blocks, and much more.
Will the audio/video recording of the workshops be available afterwards?
The workshops are not audio/video recorded and recordings will therefore not be available after the event.
Can I attend just the Professional Course?
The Positive Neuroplasticity Training is the necessary prerequisite for the Professional Course (PC), since the PC is all about using the specific concepts, methods, and practices learned in the Positive Neuroplasticity Training in occupational settings.
If you have already taken the Positive Neuroplasticity Training (or its precursor, the Taking in the Good course), you have fulfilled this prerequisite. If this applies to you, please contact us with the details of where you completed the course to complete your registration.
I’ve taken the Foundations of Well-Being program. Does that mean I can take the Professional Course without also taking the Positive Neuroplasticity Training?
While the Foundations program, in its 4-hour Learning pillar, does cover the basics of positive neuroplasticity, the 18-hour Positive Neuroplasticity Training is the intensive, comprehensive, experiential exploration of the fundamental methods of self-directed brain change, systematically applied to building inner resources to meet our three core needs for safety, satisfaction, and connection.
The Professional Course (PC) is closely linked to the Positive Neuroplasticity Training and requires the in-depth knowledge acquired within it. Consequently, the Positive Neuroplasticity Training is the prerequisite for the PC – and having already taken the Foundations of Well-Being will only deepen the experience.
Once I have completed the Professional Course, may I use some of the materials to give a small workshop or lead a support group?
Yes! You will be able to make use of some of the materials such as slides or handouts to lead groups, give workshops, or coach individual clients.
Do you offer scholarships for those in need?
We do offer a limited number of scholarships for the Positive Neuroplasticity Training. For those who cannot afford the full workshop fee, please contact the organisers directly.
