Presenting Icelandic trumpet player, Birkir Mattíasson in a jazz collaboration with Galway based musicians, Matthew Berrill (clarinet & saxophone) and Aengus Hackett (guitar)

Birkir Matthiasson was born in the Westman islands in Iceland. He began playing the trumpet at the age of six and went on to study at the Reykjavik College of Music, where he earned a degree in classical trumpet and brass. Following this Birkir joined the The European Jazz Youth Orchestra, for their “Swinging Europe” tour which was directed by the Dutch saxophone player Benjamin Herman. In 2008 Birkir completed his Master’s degree at The Royal Conservatory in the Hague where he studied with Jarmo Hoogendijk, Eric Vloeimans and Beatrijs Korevaar. Birkir is a frequent musical collaborator, working with many of Iceland’s most beloved musicians both as a guest player in ensembles and as a soloist. He is a member of Reykjavik’s Big Band and in 2014, with Jean Oh and Wonsool Lee, Birkir released an album titled, “A Lonely Sight”.

The trio will play original material as well as using a number of old Icelandic themes as a basis for their improvisations. Expect melodious, minimalistic, cinematic music from these fellow Island musicians!
