Her 23 single-authored books have been translated into 15 languages and have received numerous literary and academic prizes. She has also authored over 450 articles and book chapters. Professor Nussbaum is a fellow of the British Academy, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received honorary degrees from 56 colleges and universities. Her numerous other awards include the Prince of Austria’s Award for Social Sciences and the Order of the White Rose of Finland (First Class Knight). She is the 2016 Laureate of the Kyoto Prize. The citation in part reads: “she has led contemporary studies in social philosophy and ethics toward a future of greater human well-being, continuously applying her findings to some of today’s most vexing social concerns. Maintaining a strong sense of mission, she continues to seek ways of promoting the harmonious coexistence of different cultures and restructuring the public sphere.

The Annual Front Line Defenders Lecture was established in 2013 to provoke discussion and debate about the range of issues affecting human rights defenders as they work tirelessly to bring about changes and build robust civil societies. The lecture is broadly accessible to a general audience with an interest in philosophy, law, human rights or politics.
