Who is this training programme for?

  • Are you new to interpreting, or would like a refresher course on public service interpreting skills?
  • Or are you one of those people who often find themselves in a position of an 'unofficial' community interpreter when they are called to help a friend, neighbour or relative to communicate with various authorities?
  • Or maybe you are a bilingual or a translator who wants to learn a useful skill to help others and get extra income?

Well, here is a programme that will help you to up your game and be and look much more professional when performing as a public service interpreter.

Public Service Interpreting training programme

During this 6-hours training programme on Public Service Interpreting (also known as "community interpreting" ), you will learn about the fundamental rules, principles and skills required to carry out public service interpreting work to your best ability. You will also learn how to prepare for your interpreting assignments, what to expect from them, and how to develop your interpreting business.

This program consists of three modules. You are welcome to attend any one or two modules that are of interest to you. However, all three levels are mandatory if you want to receive a certificate.

What is Public Service Interpreting?

Public Service interpreting is an umbrella term that covers interpreting in public service settings, such as healthcare (hospitals, doctors' appointments), law enforcement (police and court), immigration (refugee centres), housing and welfare authorities, and so on.

To receive TRANSLIT's certificate of community interpreter training, you are required to:

  1. Attend all three modules
  2. Pass the test at the end of the programme (75% pass rate)
  3. Recommended: complete all homework assignments

There is no additional fee for the test.

Language and Content of the Programme

This course will be delivered in English. The content of the course includes general information on public service (community) interpreting that is not country-specific. Some examples will be given in relation to the Irish healthcare, welfare and law enforcement systems (as TRANSLIT is an Irish-based company). However, there will be a lot of generic information and examples for students from outside of Ireland; there will also be plenty of opportunities for them to research relevant issues relating to their countries.

Why do I need to take this course?

Interpreting requires a high level of professionalism and knowledge of specific terminology. As a public service interpreter, you will be working with sensitive and confidential communications. This course will prepare you for these challenges and ensure that you are highly professional and discreet in your work.

Here is some feedback from the participants of this Programme:

It is a real pleasure to follow a course which is so clearly and pleasantly presented.

I really enjoyed the course: clear overview of this amazing job, including difficulties and troubles linked with it; useful resources to make research in many languages.

Thanks very much @Translit interpreters for this brilliant job well done. Thanks for opening my eyes in so far as interpretation and translation is concerned. With this magical knowledge you have given us, I believe I'mgoing to be one of the best in this field- creme de la creme! Thanks!

This workshop was great, so much was covered. The explanations given in the light of each sessions allowed us to visualized the many aspects of interpretation and made it easier to differentiate the many areas where interpretes are needed and actually serving on a daily basis.

The material covered was comprehensive and very clearly and pleasantly presented, at an appropriate pace.

l was surprised about the amount of information provided, and the seriousness of the lessons. The teaching received during the workshop and the exercices were very well executed.
