Identity, belonging and Europe: A view from the Irish community in Belgium

This talk aims to provide a viewpoint on the Irish community in Belgium and will examine issues of identity politics, language and membership and different levels of involvement in the ‘European project’. The talk will examine how the dual notions of ‘Ireland’ and ‘Europe’ interact in Belgium, how people discuss the acquisition of new languages and the re-emergence of the Irish language in Brussels and how the community manifests itself and what political ventures they are interested in.

The speaker will present a 45-minute paper, followed by discussion and Q&A.

Speaker bio:

Dr. Sean O’ Dubhghaill is the author of “An Anthropology of the Irish in Belgium: Belonging, identity and community in Europe” (2019) and he is currently an instructor in International Affairs at Vesalius College in Brussels. His research interests include the Irish diaspora, mobility and multiculturalism.
