Event description

Description

Academy Discourse by Professor Alvin Jackson Hon. MRIA marking the anniversary of the death of John Redmond.

John Redmond and Edward Carson, the protagonists of the third Home Rule debate, were readily viewed together by contemporaries; but, with partition, independence, and the widening of the fissure between nationalism and unionism, this linkage was broken.

Jackson’s lecture compares the background, career and beliefs of Redmond with those of his most formidable opponent, Carson, focusing on a range of themes including empire, political violence and exclusion from Home Rule.

In seeking to redefine the personal and political space separating (and uniting) Redmond and Carson, Jackson also shows how – and with what success – each adapted to working within the political cultures of the union. Using the evidence of the two careers, Jackson comments more generally on the functioning of multi-national union states in early 20th century Europe.

This event follows the day-long seminar John Redmond and the Irish Parliamentary Party: a Centenary Symposium. Please book separately for this event by clicking here

Professor Alvin Jackson is the author of Judging Redmond and Carson, published by the Royal Irish Academy in March 2018 with support from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and available to pre-order
