The 8th amendment is a topic that effects everyone in Ireland, but the experience of its impact is very personal and often private. Games have a unique ability to put the player in another persons shoes, present them with the same choices and let them experience the realities of different situations.

Political games are a campaign device that is slowly growing. These games reach different demographics than those usually targeted in campaigns and often have an ability to appeal to people of different political affiliations.

Repeal Game jam is a creative event in support of the campaign to repeal the 8th amendment. We're looking at using games to reach different people who may not be as informed on the referendum or who don't think they're affected by it.

Although primarily a game jam, all mediums are welcome to join and get creative for repeal.

FAQs

What is a game jam?

A game jam is an event for people to make games based on a theme (announced at the beginning of the jam) within a given period of time.

How much does it cost?

The jam, tutorials and mentoring is all free! We will be accepting donations for the Together For Yes campaign during the event.

What can I bring into the event?

This depends on what you want to make.

• For digital games: You bring your own tools, laptop (and charger), sound equipment, peripherals, software, assets, etc. We do not provide any equipment for making digital games.
• For non-digital games (card/boardgames): Bring paper, scissors, dice, card, paints, pens, pencils, and other crafty materials.
• Art: Drawing tablet/ art supplies
• Writing: Pen and paper/laptop and charger

The venue is providing tables, chairs and sockets. Try to bring whatever you think you'll need for the event.

Is it all about digital games?

No, you can make non-digital games like boardgames, card games, RPGs, other types of pervasive games. All you need to do is bring your own craft materials.

I've never made a game, can I take part?

Yes! This event is both a creative jam for all mediums and a game jam. We'll have people giving tutorials and information on how to make games on the day, who will be on hand to help out with any problems. Games are a collaborative medium, if you write/draw/compose then you can join a team with programmers there to make a game together. No coding knowledge necessary.

I've made loads of games but I don't know how to approach this?

We'll have some tutorials on agency and presenting choice in games as well as some information from ithrivegames.org on creating empathy in games, and we're hoping to get some help from political game creators in the UK - watch this space!

What happens after the event?

We'll be collecting the different games on a itch.io page so they're easy to find, we're hoping to promote and spread the games so many people can experience them.

Is there an age restriction to participate?

Yes, this event is an adult events (over 18s) unless specified. Normally when you sign up, you have to agree that you are over 18 before completing your registration.

Do I have to be in a team?

Nope, let us know when you check-in at registration on Sunday morning, and let us know what skills you have, and we can form a group in the morning before our announcements.

How many can we have in a team?

As many as you want. :-)

What about ownership of the games we create?

All games and content produced during Repeal Jam event remains the full property of their creators. Repeal Jam makes no claim to anything participants create. When you take part in Repeal Jam events you own everything you create.

All trademarks remain property of their respective owners.

Where is the Venue?

The venue is located on William St West in Galway City's West end. The office between the Blue Note and Claddagh Cabs.

BICYCLE
The venue is a 3-5 minute walk from the Coca Cola bikeshare station on Raven's Terrace.

The closest Bus Stops are on Fr Griffin Rd near Fr Burke Park. A 3-5 minute walk through the Park will bring you to almost opposite the venue (Between Claddagh Cabs and The Blue Note).
