Conference Overview

The SAI Annual Conference provides a unique opportunity for sociologists across the island and internationally, working in all fields to present research and engage in debate with each other.

The theme of the SAI’s 2023 Annual Conference at UCD is “illuminating legacies” which is meant to combine the brightness of light with intellectual and moral enlightenment to examine visible manifestations of the continued influence of societal – and natural – legacies in the contemporary world. Legacies in this case refer to the continuing impact of past structures, institutions, groups, ideologies, and processes on present collective and individual actions and current events. The visible marks of these legacies are at times distant and almost forgotten, suddenly reappearing to remind us of their structuring power. Too often, though, the marks are painful, living reminders that a legacy continues to structure our everyday lives, particularly for members of historically disadvantaged communities. Sometimes, too, several analytically distinct, seemingly parallel, legacies overlap and intersect in the present like Covid-19, climate change and the Black Lives Matter movement over the past few years.

The SAI is delighted and grateful to be hosted by the School of Sociology of University College Dublin.

The conference dinner on the 8th of June at the conference venue. Spaces for this are limited, so you should buy dinner tickets immediately if you are interested in attending.

Attendees should purchase the ticket that applies to their status. Only SAI Members are eligible to purchase tickets listed as for SAI Members. If you wish to join the SAI, you can do so at this link: Full Membership is €55 and Postgraduate / Low Wage Membership is €25. Only UCD staff and students are eligible to purchase the UCD Staff and Student Ticket. We will have a registration desk at the conference to welcome you to the conference, check registration, and give you your packs.

The difference in registration prices is to offer a benefit to members and offer recognition of their participation in and support of the Association, to encourage and facilitate participation for early-career and precarious academics / researchers, and to reciprocate the hospitality of UCD in hosting the conference.
