According to the BusinessDirectory.com, the definition of an Account manager is:

“An employee whose job is the day-to-day support of a particular customer’s account with a business, and who serves as the primary point of contact between the customer and the company. The account manager position can provide customer support, technical support, planning and optimization for the account, as well as developing a relationship with the customer.”

Strange that they make no mention of sales because without sales the role would be Customer Care. But we can draw conclusions from the statement which differentiate the Account Manager from a Business Development Manager.

The Account Manager is assigned accounts for them to manage and they do establish themselves as a single point of contact. They leverage their position to channel as much business as possible through their company by providing information, knowledge and support. Their objective is to maintain and grow revenues through up-selling and cross-selling and feeding capital investment opportunities back to the Business Development team.

If the Account manager doubles up as the Business Development Manager, they simply work on the capital investment opportunities themselves but they must apply Solution Selling techniques as outlines in the link provided.
