Event description
Design a turnip template for EPIC's Samhain Festival in this fun arts and crafts workshop, suitable for ages 6 - 12 years old.

About this Event

Did you know that pumpkins weren't always the vegetable carved at Halloween? Traditionally, the Irish celebrated the Celtic festival of Samhain by remembering the dead, lighting bonfires, dressing up, eating barmbrack (fruit bread) and... carving turnips! As the Irish travelled around the world, they adapted these traditions to suit their new home countries - which included swapping turnips for pumpkins in North America.

Now join EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum as we bring back these old Irish traditions by designing your very own turnip! Suitable for ages 6 – 12 years old, download our turnip template, create your sinister (or sweet) design using whatever art materials you like, and share your finished drawing with us on social media using #epicmuseum by 5pm on October 20th, 2019. 5 lucky winners will be chosen from the social media entries to have their designs professionally carved and displayed in our atmospheric museum vaults as part of Samhain Festival (October 28th 2019).

To be in with a greater chance of winning and receive a little more help with your design, come along to this fun arts and crafts workshop on October 20th at 2pm, where we'll discover Samhain’s ancient traditions and devise all sorts of spooky turnips. Suitable for ages 6 - 12 years old and led by EPIC Museum's Education and Outreach Officer, you'll receive top tips to help your turnip stand out from the crowd! 5 winning designs will be chosen from this workshop, so book now for your chance to win!

Places are limited for this workshop and must be booked in advance. Please book one ticket for each child attending the workshop. By registering your place here you register for the workshop only and not the online competition. This ticket does not include entry to EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum's main exhibition.
