About this event

Scotland has earned a reputation for being a world leading location for Pharma & Life Sciences manufacturing and services. The country has developed ‘world class’ research facilities in Life Sciences with expertise across human healthcare, animal and plant sciences, aquaculture, agritech and industrial biotechnology. Scotland is one of the top three countries in the world for research productivity and impact, with its 19 universities and higher education institutions, and world leading research centres, staffed by some of the brightest international scientists.

Already established as a leading global Life Sciences cluster, the sector continues to expand with some £300 million invested in recent years by major international companies including Capsugel, GSK, Johnson Matthey, Piramal Healthcare, Quotient and ThermoFisher Scientific. Scotland has also invested heavily in developing six Innovation Centres designed to foster collaboration between academia and the Life Sciences industry. Indeed, Scotland is on track to grow the turnover of the Life Sciences industry to £8 billion by 2025 in line with the 2017 Life Sciences Strategy for Scotland.

Similarly, the Scottish Pharma sector is characterised by a cluster of more than 150 innovative and expanding companies employing over 9,000 professional in drug development. Leading Pharma companies, such as AMRI, BASF, Lonza, GSK and SAFC have established global operations in Scotland.

Scotland is responsible for over 50% of Europe’s biosafety testing and has become a leader in the use of iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells) for preclinical toxicity and drug discovery. Furthermore, Scotland is now a leading manufacturer of high potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs) and the country produces 70% of media for biomanufacturing in Europe.

Part of the Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition, which is being held at the SEC Glasgow on the 13th October 2022 , the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Summit will highlight the key trends and challenges facing the sector.
