Screening of "A Handful of Ash" in conjunction with AkiDwA
Event Information
Description
To mark International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation ActionAid and AkiDwA will host a free screening of A Handful of Ash at the Hugh Lane Gallery on Friday 6th February 2015 at 6pm.
In 2010 Kurdish film director Nabaz Ahmad together with Shara Amin, travelled through Kurdistan to record A Handful of Ash, a documentary about FGM in the region. The film approaches the subject respectfully and carefully through different women’s testimonies. Shortly after watching the documentary, the Kurdish parliament outlawed the practice. Since then, the number of girls being mutilated in Kurdistan has fallen by over 60%, an incredible success.
The free screening will start at 6pm in The Hugh Lane Gallery (Charlemont House, Parnell Square North) and after the documentary there will be opportunity to discuss the issues with a small panel of experts.
