Description

Performed by Deirdre Monaghan

Written by Brendan Laird and Deirdre Monaghan

She drove Lady Gregory mad, infuriated Yeats and made Shaw cry .

Molly Allgood was one of the great stars of the Abbey .

She is performing three plays in repertory at the Abbey Theatre , one of them written by John Millington Synge. On her one day off, Synge walks the legs off her in the Dublin mountains while hiding her from his ascendency, staunchly protestant mother.

During the Abbey Theatre riots at The Playboy Of The Western World she defends Synge during the Abbey riots by crowning some poor orphan with a bottle .

Synge is obsessed with this girl from Mary Street with the bulldog chin. He writes her letters everyday. Molly responds...sometimes.

Sean O’Casey is fond of Molly and her sister Sara. Like Sean, the Allgoods fell a few rungs down the social ladder, making them ideal for the roles of Juno Boyle and Maisie Madigan.

The play is set in October 1952 when Molly (Maire O'Neill) comes home after recording "The Silver Tassie" for the Home Service BBC.

See her come to life on stage at the Sean O'Casey Festival 2019 .

One performance only .
